Australian Shepherd Training

Should an Australian Shepherd puppy be crate trained?

We are getting an Australian Shepherd puppy soon. And both of my parents work. It's the summer now, and we have a little more than a month left of summer, then it's back to school for me and my sister. We have studied A lot about the breed. And have learned that because of the intelligence they can become bored easily, So we were thinking that while it was still a puppy we could set up a puppy area with some toys and his kennel in there. My dad would be coming home at lunch so the puppy would be alone for 4 hours, then 3 hours. Would that be okay? Considering the breed personality traits and all.. Thanks (:

I really think every dog should be crate trained, at the very least until it's a year old. I think if your dog is very well housetrained by the time summer ends and you KNOW you can trust him to not potty on the floor in this area you will set up, and you KNOW he can't get out, it's perfectly fine. It's good planning, since he'll be able to stretch out, play, etc. It's also a good idea to have your dad come home at lunch for a few months, until he's more reliable and a little older.

In the meantime however, from the time you get him to the time summer ends, house train like crazy! Make your main goal to be that your puppy is pretty reliable in the house by the end of the summer. You will have to be very vigilant, and allow your puppy to have as few accidents as possible. Use the crate. Put him in there whenever you can't watch him, when you leave the house, and when it's nighttime, etc.

Also, be sure your puppy gets plenty of walks and play. Don't overdo it on walks when he's young, go for lots of short ones and don't run him until he's a year old. Take him out in the yard and run around with him. Aussies need a ton of exercise! Also, try to do some training every day. Keep it light and fun, but keep him engaged. Aussies also need a lot of mental stimulation to keep from boredom and destruction, and this tires them out just as much as some good exercise. Sounds like you will do just fine with your puppy, good luck! Aussies are an excellent breed for the right owners.
