Do u have to give your dog Heartworm meds even in the winter?

Yes.
The active ingredient in the most common heartworm preventative is ivermectin. It works to kill the larvae (tiny worms) in the blood stream before they lodge in the heart and grow into adults. The worms keep hatching from eggs in the blood stream. You have to do this once a month to kill all the new larvae and any that were missed last dose. If you stop a worm has a chance to mature and lodge in the dog's heart.

Heartworm meds do not prevent heartworms. They kill them before they can mature into adults. You just have to keep this up all year. They prevent them from infecting the heart, not from coming into the dog's blood stream.
